Other Ways to Get Gold - INFORMATIONAL

People came to San Francisco for the gold rush. They also came to start a new life and to have more land. It was a great opportunity for women to earn money by house cleaning, running boarding houses, cooking, and washing laundry.

Many people got rich of off the miners. Many smart men got rich from being barbers because the people had to pay them which gave barbers and others lots of money. Taverns also made people rich by putting high prices on drinks. Mining towns also needed banks. Bankers earned money by living and working in mining towns.

In conclusion, most people who weren't searching for gold got rich from gold by following the miners west. The people who went with the miners made the towns, towns. Taverns gave entertainment, cooks fed the miners, and women helped the miners with household chores.

Waffle Baby

Dr. Howe-Waffle

My name is Evaline Nelson Gibbs. I was delivered by Dr. Howe-Waffle in 1914. I was one of the over 1,000 babies delivered by Dr. Howe-Waffle. I am an active child. I especially enjoy taking swimming and diving lessons. When I'm 14, these lessons will help me save a man from drowning in a river. I must be a very strong swimmer. When I grow up, I will have 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. I won't know that I'm a Waffle Baby until I come on a tour of the Waffle House in 2000 when I'm 86 years old. I live to be over 90 years old. I wonder if that makes me the oldest Waffle Baby?

The Wet Nurse of King Tut

Zivie, an archaeologist, found a chamber for a woman of ancient Egypt which is very rare. The mummy's name was Maya and with the hieroglyphs Maya was found to be King Tut's wet nurse. A  wet nurse is a woman who feeds another woman's newborn baby. This discovery is a big part of history's puzzles getting put together.

Maya was not found in the Valley of the Kings where most pharaohs are buried. She was buried where only very important mummies were buried. Many people think that Tut's sister was his wet nurse.

To identify the mummy, you compare pieces of the mummy that fell off with pieces of the mummy itself to make sure that the mummy in the coffin is really the mummy that is written on the coffin. Why you might have to do this is because a long time ago, lots of people only wanted to steal the coffin and not the mummy so they would move the mummy to another coffin. Since the mummies might be swapped, you would want to analyze the mummy and the coffin.

Apple Field Trip

At the Apple store, I had a fun, interactive field trip. For example, we got to tell our stories to each other. Then, I used iBook to write my story. I would recommend this field trip.

Wings of Fire: The End that Started the Beginning

Prologue

"Are we there yet" Clay asked. "If we weren't there 5 seconds ago what makes you think we're there now?" Tsunami said. "We're here" Starflight yelled. "Oh, we are here" Glory said. "Great" Sunny exclaimed. They all went to the cliff to see the wide ocean. "I'm home" Tsunami yelled. They all went down to the beach to rest. Clay lit a fire for warmth and Tsunami laid down on the beach to rest. Clay lit a fire for warmth and Tsunami laid down on her back to feel the waves wash up on her. Clay laid next to her to sleep. That night everything felt still and slow.

In the morning Tsunami jumped into the sea and saw the passageway to her mother's palace, Kingdom of Summer. She swam up the passageway to the tunnel and right into the beach of the palace under the canopy. All the dragons looked at her as she walked up to her mother, Queen Coral. Coral ran to her and huged her so much she felt dizzy but then she noticed 4 more hands. Her sisters Ankulet and Anstear were there too. Then, Tsunami asked sternly "Where is Riptide?" "He should be in the training group on the third floor of the palace" Coral answered. Tsunami swam up and looked at the crowd of trainers. Then spoted him. Tsunami swung herself to him and signaled with her scales "protect me." He signaled back "yes" then pointed up so he could talk to her...

Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society: Women at the Turn of the Century

On Saturday, April 2nd, Mia learned about women at the turn of the century and the fight for women's rights. At 1pm, Mia participated in the women's rights rally on the steps of City Hall. Then, she helped with sales in the gift shop during the monthly open house at the Dr. Willella Howe Waffle historical house.
