Historic Trails to the West

Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society:

Historic Trails to the West

Open House & Special Guest Speaker
at the Dr. Howe-Waffle House

Saturday, August 1

Take a journey back in time as you tour the beautifully restored 1889 Victorian Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle House and Medical Museum on Saturday, August 1st from noon to 4:00. As you tour this historic home, once the residence and medical office of one of Orange County’s first female physicians, hear fascinating stories of the journeys that brought Orange County pioneer women to California.

Charles Epting, author of Orange County Pioneers, Oral Histories from the Work Progress Administration, will speak at 2:00 pm and be available to sell and autograph books from noon to 4:00.

Mia had a quick Q&A with the guest presenter, Charles Epting. They bonded over their shared love of history.

Mia also enjoyed the pioneer stories. She had lots of questions for the woman who talked about the Oregon Train since Mia was traveling to Oregon the next day.

Waffle Baby

Dr. Howe-Waffle
My name is Evaline Nelson Gibbs. I was delivered by Dr. Howe-Waffle in 1914. I was one of the over 1,000 babies delivered by Dr. Howe-Waffle. I am an active child. I especially enjoy taking swimming and diving lessons. When I'm 14, these lessons will help me save a man from drowning in a river. I must be a very strong swimmer. When I grow up, I will have 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. I won't know that I'm a Waffle Baby until I come on a tour of the Waffle House in 2000 when I'm 86 years old. I live to be over 90 years old. I wonder if that makes me the oldest Waffle Baby?

Santa Ana Historical Society Volunteer

I was a volunteer at the historical Waffle House. I helped people decorate cookies! It was fun to decorate cookies with people visiting the house. I liked helping the historical society. It was my first volunteer job. I was so happy when my mom, grandma, and great grandma came to see me volunteer.

On Saturday, April 2nd, Mia learned about women at the turn of the century and the fight for women's rights. At 1pm, Mia participated in the women's rights rally on the steps of City Hall. Then, she helped with sales in the gift shop during the monthly open house at the Dr. Willella Howe Waffle historical house.
