Go Math!: Chapter 1

Reflections of math lessons with Mia:

1. Place Value & Patterns

  • 8/22/15:  Place value was review for Mia. The focus on the relationship between the place values as 10x larger to move to the next greater place value or 1/10 to move to the next smaller place value was new for her. She struggled with understanding that "10x as much" made a number larger (i.e. 1 place value more) and "1/10 of" made a number smaller (i.e. 1 place value less). Mia was not interested or engaged in the lesson:  "I don't need to know this."

2. Place Value of Whole Numbers
  • 8/23/15:  Mia was more engaged in the lesson. She enjoyed solving the "Problem of the Day" so we'll start a routine of starting with those problems. She can easily solve the problems of the day when we're together but she had a hard time completing the practical applications independently (work problems). Again, this lesson was an easy review for her.
3. Algebra - Properties

  • 8/26/15:  Addition and Multiplication properties (cummutative, associative, and identity) were review. The new distributive property posed a challenge. Mia was unfocused and frustrated:  "I hate algebra; It's so boring!".
4. Algebra - Powers of 10 and Exponents

  • 8/27/15:  Easy lesson for Mia. We discussed the concept of dinner prior to the lesson and the prior exposure seemed to help her during the lesson. Mia easily identified the pattern of adding a 0 for each power of 10. More negative math talk:  "I'm not going to be able to do this. I'm bad at math."
5. Algebra - Multiplication Patterns
  • This lesson was difficult for Mia to complete when working on the independent exercise. When we work together step by step, she didn't have any problems.
